Pte George Edward Baldine Cyster 25/05/1915 aged 28
George was a married man with 4 children residing at 14, Alexandra Street, Walsall.
Prior to being called up on reserve he was employed as a railway shunter at Bescot and was drafted to France on Sunday 16/08/1914.
George was severely wounded in both legs, one being broken, whilst serving in the trenches at Hill 60 near Ypres, Belgium. He was removed to 8th Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul, France where he succumbed to his injuries four hours after arrival.

L/Cpl John McNally 31/05/1915
John was born in Walsall, the son of Michael and Emma (nee Leadbrook) McNally of 1 Court, 2, John Street, Walsall, his father being a brass caster.
He enlisted in the Army at Walsall in 1913 and, prior to being mobilised, was employed as a mopper by Mr Bird of Shaw Street, Walsall.
A comrade wrote to his family informing them that John had been shot in the head whilst on sentry duty and had died within hours.

Bmb John Breakwell 21/06/1917 aged 22
John was born in Heath End, Rushall the son of Edwin and Pamela (nee Walker) Breakwell of Cross Street, Heath End.
A horse driver and coal miner at the Norton Green Colliery, John enlisted in the Army at Walsall in 12/1914.
Wounded in action, most probably by counter battery fire, John was removed to a Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul where he succumbed to his injuries.
His brother Pte Edwin Breakwell 19/03/1916 is buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery.

Dvr Samuel Moore 05/03/1916 aged 17
Resident at 113, Wolverhampton Road, Walsall with his parents, Samuel enlisted in the Army at Walsall in 03/1915 and was drafted to France on Sunday 12/09/1915.
He died of pneumonia in hospital at Bailleul.

Pte Charles Brown 10/07/1917
Charles resided at 28, Duncalfe Street, Walsall.
He enlisted in the Army at West Bromwich in 12/1915 at which time he was employed by The British and Colonial Horse Shoe and Machine Company in Charles Street, Walsall.

Sjt Edward Lloyd 25/05/1915 aged 34
Edward was a married man with 5 children residing at 6, Sneyd Lane, Bloxwich.
Previously a coal miner, his wife received the following letter from Lieutenant Colonel Raymer:
“I grieve very much to tell you that your husband died at 4am on May 25, in hospital at Bailleul, from wounds he received while seated outside a dugout behind the trenches on the 20th. We hoped at first that he would recover, but the bullet had entered his lung, and the wound proved fatal.”
It would appear that Edward received his treatment at 8th Casualty Clearing Station as a member of the nursing staff also wrote saying that he had been so severely wounded that, on Sunday 23/05/1915, it had been necessary to amputate one arm. He failed to rally, however, and succumbed to his injuries two days later.

Gnr Ernest Brown 03/06/1917
Ernest was the son of Edwin and Mary Brown of 1, Walsall Road, Heath End, Pelsall.
A single man, he was employed as a miner at the Norton Green Colliery when he enlisted in the Army at Walsall on Monday 15/03/1915.
Ernest was mortally wounded on Saturday 02/06/1917 during a massive bombardment preceding the Battle of Messines.
The War Diary states:
“1 June 1917 - Siege Farm. Gas shelling from 11pm to 3am. Preparations were made for the attack, including a practice barrage and dummy barrage in full! 3 casualties during the night.
2 June 1917 - Orders were confirmed and circulated to the batteries.
3 June 1917 - 11 am. Bombardment of Wytschaete began; zero hour was 11.30; little response from the enemy on Wytschaete Ridge apart from a distress rocket. The bombardment was on the whole of the army front and was observed from Kemmel Hill. 30 Division was observed attacking successfully on our right. 6 other rank casualties in the brigade, gassed or wounded. D/58 had a gun knocked out by a direct hit. Total rounds fired by 58 Brigade in June - 18 pounder = 25,490; 4.5inch howitzers = 13,912.”

Rfm Thomas Reddy 10/03/1917 aged 28
Thomas was the son of Joseph and Rose Reddy of 5, Back of 15, Wolverhampton Street, Walsall, his father being a rope maker by trade.
Enlisting in 09/1914 at Ilkley, Yorkshire in the West Riding Rgt, with service number 12747, Thomas transferred to the Royal Irish Rifles and was drafted to France on Sunday 18/07/1915.
He was wounded in 03/1917 with severe gunshot wounds to the chest and moved to a Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul where he succumbed.

Sjt Joseph Cliffe 18/06/1916
Joseph was a married man with 2 children residing at Sandhurst Place, Daw End Rushall.
He died in hospital at Bailleul as a result of inhaling gas poisoning received the previous day, Saturday 17/06/1916.
The War Diary records:
“17 June 1916 - Enemy gas attack at 12.20am. Two waves of gas at a short interval. Third waves probably caused by gas being blown down from north. No infantry followed.”

Pte Joseph Edward Smith 15/04/1918
Joseph was a single man who lived with his parents, Richard and Emily Smith, at 62, Tantarra Street, Walsall, his father being a leather currier.
Prior to the war he was employed as an assistant mechanic at The Grove Laundry.
Enlisting in the Army at Walsall in 04/1917, he served for 4 months at the front prior to his death during the German spring offensive.

Sjt Daniel Baugh 11/06/1917 aged 34
Daniel was a married man with 6 children, his last address being recorded as 8, Vicarage Row, Pleck Road, Walsall. It would appear, however, that Daniel lived, worked and enlisted in the Army at Springburn, Glasgow.
Wounded in operations on Messines Ridge, Daniel succumbed the following day.

Pte George Dean 04/06/1917
George was the son of William and Amelia Martha Dean of 72, Green Lane, Walsall, his father being a silver plater.
Employed as a bit mopper at the Alma Tube Works, Pleck Road, Walsall when he enlisted, he was drafted to France during 12/1916 and was accidentally wounded while in Mont Vidaigne Camp practising for an attack on Oostaverne.
The War Diary records:
“4 June 1917 - Further practise of attack on Oostaverne line. The battalion practised rapid extensions by companies.
Casualties - Accidentally wounded in camp 11585 Sgt. Jones H. and 30825 Pte. Dean. G.
5 June 1917 - Casualty - 30825 Pte Dean, G. died of wounds received the previous day.”

Pte John Henry Cope 23/02/1916 aged 18
John was the son of Isaac and Mary Ann Cope of 33, The Flats, Bloxwich, his father being a coal miner.
Also a miner at Huntingdon Colliery, John was very badly wounded in the legs and was removed to hospital. The injury to his right leg was so severe that it was amputated however he did not recover from the operation and passed away at 8.30 pm on Wednesday 23/02/1916.
