Sgt Leonard Keith Webb aged 19 Leonard was young Raunds man who answered the call of his King and Country and paid the ultimate price. He was born in December 1924, the only son of Herbert and Alice Webb of Park Road and when he died he left a fiancée of less than a month, Miss King of Rushden. Educated at Kimbolton School, he was well known locally as a member of “The Spiders” dance band who provided the music for many a shindig in and about Raunds during the early 1940’s. Fellow band member Frederick Bailey also perished during the global conflict. Keith joined the Royal Air Force and had attained the rank of Sergeant (Air Gunner) when he was killed in action in June 1944, aged 19. He served with 106 Squadron based at RAF Metheringham, Lincolnshire, a member of the crew of Avro Lancaster, serial number JB664. His aircraft was shot down over Bransles on the 28th June while on a bombing raid on the Vitry le Francois railway yards, all seven crew members died. However, surviving letters show that his last resting place had still been the subject of doubt to his mother as late as 1948, when it was finally confirmed. Keith Webb is also remembered on the Kimbolton School WW2 Roll of Honour in the castle chapel. In his memory, his relatives also contributed to the purchase of trees and shrubs for the new Memorial Gardens in Raunds in 1950. for Steve Bence and the Raunds War Memorials Research Group www.raundswarmemorials.org |
