FOUILLOY Communal Cemetery (Somme France)

Pte William Pedley 08/08/1918
William was born in Walsall to Alfred and Catherine Pedley of 26, Chuckery Road, Walsall, his father being a horse currycomb maker.
He was married to Alice and in 1910 they moved to Australia settling at 13, Seddon Street, Subiaco, Western Australia where they had two children, Leslie and Ivy.
William was employed as a foreman in a saddlery firm in Perth and enlisted in the Australian Army on Monday 07/05/1917.
He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Amiens when his bn attacked the German lines at 4.20am on the day of his death.
Removed to the 13th Australian Field Ambulance hesuccumbed to his injuries the same day.
The War Diary (in part) records:
“8 August 1918 - 4.20am. Zero Hour. Barrage opens (creeping). Fog very thick. Enemy’s reply comparatively light and scattered. Troops move off but fog hampers them, many becoming temporarily lost.
Others who kept moving forward overcame enemy’s resistance which was not serious. Enemy shelling brisk 4.30 to 5am tanks being several times struck. Not much resistance shown by enemy in trenches and outposts and soon after 5am our advanced parties reported having attained their objectives ie trench 800 yards west of Warfusee-Abancourt astride the ain road.
1 officer killed, 1 officer wounded 1 other ranks killed and died of wounds, 35 other ranks wounded, 2 other ranks missing.”
