Capt Roland Justus Hill MC 03/03/1918 aged 31
Roland and 2nd/Lt Duncan McLean, were sadly shot by one of their own men *
He had had to tell this private that he was to be transferred back to his original unit and that meant going back to the front (Roland's battalion was temporarily stood down).
The private went berserk and shot his two officers.

Roland was awarded the Military Cross.
His citation says:
Lieutenant and Quartermaster Rowland Justice Hill, 2nd Bn, Otago Rgt.
For conspicuous galantry and devotion to duty.
As Quartermaster to his Battalion this officer has displayed the greatest gallantry and devotion to duty in personally taking forward rations and supplies up to the front line, he himself superintending their distribution under heavy shell fire.
His energy and initiative have at all mainly due to his efforts that the fighting men in the front line have never run short of food or water.
He is deserving of special distinction.
