LAON (St Just) Communal Cemetery (Aisne France)

L. to R.: W. A. Harrison - V. Carriline - F. D. Jago - K. W. B. Moodie - F. B. Pomeroy - J. A. Shaw - B. E. Smith - P. H. F. W. Leland - A. F. Cheetham
Sgt Basil Ernest Smith aged 21
On 05/05/1942, Stirling Bomber N6124, OJ-R of 149 Squadron RAF failed to return from an Operation to Stuttgart. The aircraft crashed at about 0400 hrs at Agnicourt, NE of Laon. (Please note that it was not Aguilcourt SE of Laon as recorded by Bill Chorley, and it was not Agincourt as once reported by Bomber Command Association).
All the crew were killed, and they were taken to this Cemetery for burial.
(This suggests a Luftwaffe recovery since Laon was a German night-fighter base).
Basil receives the visit of his niece, Ann Mole.
The father of David, Ann's husband, Douglas John Mole is buried at Taillette (Fr)
P/O Patrick Henry Francis William leland 06/05/1942 aged 27
for his relative Nick Hinde
