L/Cpl 622946 Victor Roy Tweney
MM Victor was born 04/12/1896 and enlisted 05/05/1915 1st Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade, received the MM for bravery in the Field, 04/11/1918 defending this cemetery. He was one of two Vickers machine guns sent ahead by a Captain Worthington, to engage large numbers of German troops holding a cemetery at Onnaing. He was severely wounded during the engagement and although wounded refused to leave his gun and continued to fire until re-inforcements arrived. Fortunately, he survived the war. Victor was awarded the Bravery medal: For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in action on November 4, 1918, at Onnaing. Private Tweney rushed his machine gun to a flank and under intense machine gun and rifle fire kept his gun in action until a section of Motor Machine Guns came into action against large numbers of the enemy holding the Onnaing Cemetary. During the fight Private Tweney was badly wounded but insisted on remaining the Number one on the gun until the objective was taken. Throughout he showed a fine example of grit and determination. Victor's comrade, Pte Osmond John Culbert Begin is buried in Pargny British Cemetery, Somme France. For his grandson Tom Tweney |
