RAISMES Communal Cemetery (Nord France)

Pte Walter Bastard 27/04/1918
The youngest son of Africa and Sarah Annie Bastard of 72, Wolverhampton Road, Walsall, Walter was an engineer at the Alma Tube Works, Pleck Road, Walsall when he enlisted at Wolverhampton on Wednesday 17/03/1915.
He disembarked in France on Sunday 18/03/1917.
On Wednesday 21/11/1917 Walter’s bn attacked Crêvecœur and took and held Revelon Château.
On Friday 30/11/1917, however, the Germans broke through the British lines and attacked the bn in the rear and flanks causing terrible casualties.
During the course of this day’s fighting Walter was taken prisoner by the Germans and removed to a prisoner of war camp at Friedrichfeld Wesel, Germany.
He later died in captivity.
