Pte Edward Claude "Bob" Malyon 28/05/1940 aged 28
Following the erection of the new Ingatestone and Fryerning War Memorial in June 2006, a member of Bob’s family wrote this:
"Even at school he was always called “Bob”. He was the second of eight children born to Grace and William John Malyon of 1 Victoria Cottages, Mill Green, Ingatestone. After school, with no work, Bob and his elder brother Jim walked to Kent to join the Army. Bob passed the medical and was accepted (Jim failed with ear trouble and came home). After training, Bob was sent to India for seven years. When he came home to Mill Green he worked at Hoffman’s and then we all moved to 2 Council Houses, Ingatestone. In 1939 he married Beatrice May and had a daughter Maureen. Being on the Reserve, he was called up for service a week before war was declared and the day war was declared he went to France from Pembroke Dock, South Wales. In March 1940 his daughter died on her first birthday. He managed to get seven days leave but arrived too late for the funeral (that was in April 1940). He went back to France and was killed on the 28 May 1940, aged 28, in Belgium. I must add he was a great cricketer and played for Ingatestone in the Recreation Ground and once scored “Six” by hitting the ball into the church grounds."
For his family and the members of The Ingatestone cricket club's , Essex, England
