Harvey is born 14 January
1917 at 'Teddington' the forester's house on the 'Woodstock' Estate at Inistioge,
Co Kilkenny, Ireland. He had qualified as an Air Navigator on 18 June 1944 and was promoted to Flight Sergeant( temporary) on 19 June.Thereafter his crew which belonged to Lancaster Squadron 12B only flew six flights on 19, 22, 23/245 24 and 29 June 1944. Harvey's RAF number was 1601049. On the sixth and final flight, they were on a mission to bomb a V1 site near Calais. Just after the bombs were released from the Lancaster they were hit by flak fired form the ground. The Lancaster exploded in mid air. Four of the crew managed to escape by parachute. The three others, including Harvey, were not so lucky and died in the crash. They were buried, not in a war cemetery, but in a church graveyard in Trevaunt near San Pol. Those who escaped were taken prisoner by the Germans except for one who managed to get to a Convent. There he was dressed as a Nun, in which garb he remained until the end of the war. |
