2nd/Lt Eddie Fisher 16/11/1916 aged 17
Eddie Fisher (OE1909-16): An Appreciation:
They say a great picture is worth a thousand words; but the case of Eddie Fisher (OE1909-1916) this picture and caption express much, much more. The jolly nature of comparing the long jump to the trenches of the Somme would become a reality for the young Eddie Fisher, and the caption “A jump that would be useful when rushes the trenches” a painful one for Emanuel boys who knew the school athletics star. The picture shows a teenager winning the Public Schools Sports long jump event at Stamford Bridge in April of 1915, and almost a year to the day later Fisher left Emanuel to take up a commission in the 3rd Batallion of the East Lancashire, and six further months later, on the 16th of November 1916 he would be dead. He was 17 years old.
So who was Eddie Fisher, the boy we see in the picture? Sadly, most of the exploits and stories of OEs from this period are sadly forgotten, however, Fisher was arguably Emanuel School’s greatest ever all round athlete of the 20th Century who left school early at sixteen to join the war effort. He was a Second Lieutenant in the East Lancashire Regiment, dying in the Battle of the Ancre, a region of South East France, on November 16th of 1916, this was the final day of fighting in this area for some time and was connected to many other major battles in the Somme region. After this battle the bitter weather would become the main enemy for the next few months.
Fisher begins to appear in the Portcullis magazines early on with appearances for the Marlborough Lyons rugby teams. However, he was a true all rounder and when he was fifteen cleaned up at the school’s sports day: 2nd in the 100 Yards, 1st in Hurdles, 1st in 220 Yards, 1st in High Jump (5 foot 4 inches) and the Long Jump (19 foot 6 inches). On this occasion Fisher broke three school records. Actually a couple of years ago I was chatting to an OE (in his 80s) and he recalled trying to “beat Fisher’s High Jump record” I originally thought he was mistaken because I had seen this photo and thought he meant the Long Jump, however, when I investigated further I realised that Fisher held both records for many years! Actually, I’m not sure how many years passed before they were beaten, if at all. All existing records indicate he was a truly superb athlete.
Fisher didn’t rest on his laurels and settle for school records he also broke several Public Schools records. The attached photo shows Fisher winning the Long Jump at Stamford Bridge, he won other major events at these school boy championships also including the High Jump with a leap of 4 foot 11 inches 9 which was actually less than his school record) and the 110 meter hurdles. The Summer 1915 Portcullis tells us “thanks again to Fisher, as we regained the Public Schools Athletics Challenge Cup, which we last won in 1912”.
“Sir Edmund Tintacks” as he was known at school was quite a character, captaining one of the most successful early Rugby 1st XVs, quite a few other players would also die in the conflict. “Tintacks” was also credited in helping Emanuel win the coveted “Tippets” Challenge Cup with his superb running and jumping. However, he also raised some smiles when he accidently smashed his head through a train window, requiring stitches a few weeks before helping the school win the Tippets Cup. Fisher was also a committed Christian and ably helped around the school chapel, and encouraged others to explore their faith.
If Fisher hadn’t joined the army I’m sure he would have been a certainty for Captain of the School, however, when he left his school CV was very impressive: Captain of Lyons, Captain of 1st XV, Captain of Athletics, School Athletics Champion, Public School Sports Champion, Captain of 3rd XI Cricket, Boxing and was a Cadet Officer in the OTC. One wonders what might have been if this promising young man had survived the Great War. Great, great things I’d imagine.
