William Henry Salmon 29/07/1917 George was born 1892 in Bedminster, Bristol. He worked there as a Grocer's shop assistant. He is here with his wife Catherine and his son Thomas David (1915 - 2004) |
Pte William Paterson
KIA 26/09/1918 aged 23 His brother Pte Thomas Paterson died on 26/08/1918 aged 19 and is buried in Vaulx Hill Cemetery (Pas de Calais) |

Pte John Robert "Robb" Woods
21/11/1895 - 31/05/1918 Robb enlisted into Machine Gun Corps 14/09/1914. He was born in Aughnaskew Maguiresbridge Co Fermanagh, son of William and Margaret Jane Woods. For Tony and Linda (his great niece) Watson |
2nd/Lt Roper Henry Whitrod 28/05/1918
aged 28 He joined the Coldstream Guards aged 14 as a boy soldier, enlisting at Stratford on 30/01/1905 and started at Aldershot on 31/01/1905. Roper served in Egypt for 5 years and was promoted to Sgt on 25/02/1916. He was in the BEF, landing in France on 12/08/1914. He was granted a permanent commission in 1918 as a 2nd/Lt in the Kings (Liverpool Rgt) in the 4th Bn. Their war diary shows him and other new officers arriving at Roebrouck camp on 14/05/1918. Roper was next mentioned on 28/05/1918 when he was "killed on return journey by a shell, eight Or wounded". The diary entry for 29/05/1918 says " Lt R Whitrod was buried at 2.30pm in Gwalia military cemetery, near Poperinghe." He left a wife who he married in 1915 called Minnie Whitrod and a little girl called Margaret, he also left his father Ramaiah, mother Eliza, brother Ramaiah Charles and three sisters, Rose, Maude and Florrie. for his great niece Eugenie Whitrod-Brooks |
Cpl John F. Swaine 28/09/1917 His father was an ex Drum Major in the infantry fought in India, awarded the Indian General Service medal with Pegu clasp (2nd Burma War 1853 - 54). He was one of four brothers, only one survived the war. His brother Pte Sidney Swaine (12/04/1918) is buried at Wimereux communal cemetery. for Tony Beard |
