Pte James Sutton 27/10/1918 aged 22 James was the son of James Jonah and Emma Sutton of 213, Pleck Road, Walsall. Employed by Walker Brothers Limited of Pleck Road, Walsall, James enlisted at Wednesbury in the Royal Field Artillery with service number 99761 and transferred at some stage in his service to the 6th Bn, Leinster Rgt, with service number 10426, and then to the Gloucestershire Rgt. He saw active service throughout the Gallipoli campaign, in Salonica, Egypt and in France. Between Monday 21/10/1918 and Wednesday 30/10/1918 James’s bn were in billets at Le Cateau. The men, however, were engaged on work repairing the Le Cateau-Richmont Hill-Forest road and the Le Cateau-Corbeau-Forest road, clearing debris and maintaining the thoroughfare. Others in the bn were ‘loaned’ to the Royal Engineers to assist in the construction of bridges. for Graeme Clarke and the people of Walsall |
